This low-growing member of the Buttercup Family has a mounding habit with finely dissected foliage and prefers dry, well-draining soils. The flower stalks emerge before the foliage in spring and are covered in soft, fuzzy hairs. Each stalk culminates in a large purple flower with bright yellow center. The leaves emerge as the flowers fade, but the drying seed head of the spent blooms is attractive all its own! Very similar to the fuzzy seed heads of Clematis. Photo courtesy of Rüdiger
