A native, bunch-forming grass that is extremely drought tolerant. Generally growing in dry shortgrass-prairies, thickets, and savannah ecosystems. It needs full to part-sun and prefers drier soils. The seed heads are suspended horizontally on the stalks and start of beige then mature to a dark blue. The foliage is very fine and airy, staying a bright green to blue-grey and eventually turning to shades of brown, red, and/or orange in the fall to early winter.
