Giant Dogwood | This is a very fun and unusual dogwood. Growing to 30-40 feet tall and wide it has a similar growth habit as our native flowering dogwood but the flowers are totally different. First of all the new flowers start growing and look just like broccoli! As they mature and begin to flower the whole tree are covered in white cymes (clusters of tiny flowers) that give the look that the tree is covered in snow. A very under utilized tree that we would like to see used more in gardens! If you want to rile up your friends like Paul Cappiello that are connoisseurs of dogwoods mention that you heard there is a push to change the genus of many dogwood species. Cornus controversa would be under the name Swida controversa. Swida.....at least it has a ring to it!
